BehavioRx Case of the Month
for October 2006

Aggressive, Uncontrollable Dog

The clients enrolled in our Behavior Problem Diagnostics program about a serious problem with their 13 week-old white, male German Shepherd puppy, whom they hadgotten at 7 weeks of age. "Isaac" was uncontrollable, whining biting at both the wife and husband, their 14 month old female German Shepherd, as well as the family cats. The puppy was literally off-the-wall, nipping at the owners, whining growling... etc., etc. The only time he was tolerable was when asleep.

We proceeded on a preliminary assumption that there was definitely some condition that was abnormal. The wife was consulting with the veterinarian often, since she was becoming convinced that Isaac had more wrong with him than a normal pup. Born in a pony shed, Isaac had not had much broad early socialization. However, his aggressive behavior was not what is normally expected, since his new owners certainly provided it for the 6 weeks before contacting us. "Margie" said she would follow our BehavioRx Instructions for Puppy Training, Biting, Aggression To Owners, and Obedience Training - A Primer, and persevere with her efforts to discover any contributing health complications, which she strongly suspected were lurking in his body and
mind.

Thanks to both owners' dedication to following the instructions, they did produce some degree of improvement in Isaac's aggression and lack of behavioral
control. We did not hear from the owners for nearly a year. Then, we received startling news... Isaac was diagnosed as "autistic," and was being treated
successfully. He was improving dramatically! We secured the owners cooperation and reported her description of the treatment in progress in our Pet Behavior
Newsletter, issue #2006-3. This issue is available to non-subscribers for $5.00. It can be ordered at the addresses below, and it is most exciting, especially
since there's another case included and fascinating reports about autism in dogs.

These cases demonstrate how the devotion, dedication and humanity of a dog's owners can not only save dogs' lives, but help others (including your humble
host) to keep on trying, even when hope is not apparent.
