Euthanasia - An Ode for Disappointed Dog Owners
Many years ago a client called with a problem involving a sickly puppy who
was not learning his housetraining in the way she was trying to teach it. Further, the
pup,
an expensive purebred, required corrective surgery, leaving scars and a crooked
leg. Her question; "Would it be better for us both if I just had him put down?"
left your humble host sleepless for nearly two nights. I asked that she not make a
decision until I checked with her veterinarian and did some behavior research. I
telephoned and reported my findings, but asked that she await the arrival of a little poem
I had written and sent her the day before. She agreed.
Here is that "Ode," presented with a prayer that it may kindle
sparks of longer and happier lives for readers with doubts about their disappointing pet
dogs.
ODE ON "KINDNESS'
You phoned me, Mrs. Anagin,
To tell me of your strife;
You say your sickly pup
Is fighting for his life?
The veterinarian said today
He's sure to pull him through;
But, even then, he pointed out,
So much depends on you.
A moment's pain he needn't know,
But still, you say to me,
"I bought him from a champion line,
Now look at what he'll be!"
"His malady will last for life,
He'll never make a name;
He'll always be an ugly runt,
And walk as if he's lame."
You're crying, Mrs. Anagin,
What's torturing your mind?
Are thoughts of "putting him to sleep,"
Appearing to be "kind?"
So now you're asking me to say
What my advice would be;
As if my thoughts might ease your load;
"Responsibility."
Oh, damn you, Mrs. Anagin,
I'm sure you'll think me odd,
But never do I see my role
As one where I play God.
That puppy holds your image clear,
That's why he fights to live.
His loyal heart is pledged to you.
Now ... What have you to give?
