BehavioRx Case of the Month
for August 1999

A Diagnostics Service client submitted this case. His back-yard dog, a 7-month old, neutered Labrador Retriever began digging out under the fence during the month of June, which was a very hot month. The dog didn't roam, but lay on the front porch, where some neighborhood strays had attacked him and seriously punctured a foreleg. The client then put the Lab on a tether and sought our help.

Fact-finding indicated a very healthy young dog who was seeking escape from the searing early afternoon sun and heat. The client had even had to put out two, large extra water bowls when the heat first increased.

We asked the clients if the Lab, "George," had ever lived in the house with them. The answer was "Yes," but that he had been put out in May, when the weather turned nice. It turned out that George was actually no problem in the house, which had air conditioning!

Solution:

A suitable location for a doggy-door was chosen and since its installation George and his people are all "cool."
